Resilience

Resilience planning for communities is an initiative supported by local authorities and by both Scottish and UK governments, the principle of which is that communities develop local response and expertise to help themselves during an emergency such as flooding, severe weather, fires or major incidents. Clearing of snow, placing sandbags, delivery of supplies, providing meals and assistance in halls and checking on neighbours are a few of the tasks carried out by volunteers.

First aid training, including defib and CPR is made available for volunteers. Equipment such as radios, hi-viz waterproof coats, hi-viz vests, gloves, litter pickers, snow shovels are all available for use by volunteers.

Volunteers can be called out to assist with flooding in the town to complement the work of the Hawick Flood Protection Group led by Councillor Stuart Marshall.  Other services provided by Resilience volunteers might include shopping, telephone befriending, dog walking, rubbish removal, laundry, delivery of school meals, delivery of prescriptions and other medical supplies, for those vulnerable members within our community.

For Hawick to sign up to the Resilience Plan, we need a constant Register of Volunteers.
